Here are the
activities that we undertook throughout the 10 day New
York fieldtrip. Although your itinerary will most probably
be different, it gives you an idea of what to expect.
Monday: Orientation:
Arrive at Manhattan after travelling from JFK. Brief stop
at the YMCA, then walk to New York Public Library and Grand
Central Terminus. Meet with tutors at NYPL for an informal
briefing in the late afternoon.
Tuesday: Southern Manhattan:
Visits to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (9.30am
at the ferry). If you arrive back in time spend the afternoon
at the UN building. Remember to be back at the YMCA in time
for an evening discussion 6-8pm.
Wednesday: Lower
East Side: immigration and regeneration:
Up early in time to get to the Lower East Side Tenement
Museum for 9.30am. After the visit, use the afternoon to
walk around the Lower East Side. If you have time visit
Tompkins Square Park and South Street Seaport.
Thursday: Issues of Urban Renewal and Representation:
Group visit to the Bronx and Harlem today. Morning: Bronx
tour, lunch in Little Italy. Evening: early tour of Harlem
followed by the rest of the evening at a Harlem Jazz Club.
Friday: Local Projects and the Financial District:
Local projects will be organised related to the research
projects. For the remainder of the time visit the financial
district including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Wall
Street and Greenwich Village. Be back at YMCA from 6-8pm
for discussions.
Saturday: Research for projects
Spend time in the library and around NY to find information
relevant to your project.
Sunday: Projects, Posters and Presentations
Prepare your posters and present them to your group.
Monday: Lower East Side: immigration and regeneration
Eldridge Street Synagogue (9.30am). Afternoon, project work
and visit remaining landmarks.
Tuesday: Last day:
Time for shopping and visiting any final landmarks. Leave
Manhattan in early afternoon. |
