Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was born November
29, 1908 in Connecticut and was educated in New York.
Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was the civil rights leader
in the United States from the 1930s through the 50s,
and to a great extent through the 60s until his passing
in 1972.
In 1941 he became New York's first Black
councilman, and was Harlem's Congressman from 1945 until
1971. He was involved in drafting legislation to end
discrimination and in advocating a minimum wage. The
House of Representatives condemned him in 1967. He eventually
lost his seat in 1970, and died two years later in Miami.
