ADAM CLAYTON POWELL Jr. (1908 - 1972)

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was born November 29, 1908 in Connecticut and was educated in New York. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was the civil rights leader in the United States from the 1930s through the 50s, and to a great extent through the 60s until his passing in 1972.

In 1941 he became New York's first Black councilman, and was Harlem's Congressman from 1945 until 1971. He was involved in drafting legislation to end discrimination and in advocating a minimum wage. The House of Representatives condemned him in 1967. He eventually lost his seat in 1970, and died two years later in Miami.
